When you re-watch the movie, at least for me, I am struck how I stopped focusing on the narrative at all and really focused on the scenes, the bottled moments and witty dialogue.

Good Will Hunting is an excellent movie that falls short of the upper crust because it was maybe not daring enough. I cannot think of a more satisfying way to tell this type of story. The highlights on the cd soundtrack therefore are the exceptional Baker Street by the late and sadly missed Gerry Rafferty, Danny Elfmans Will Hunting. This is not all moments of feel good triumph or acceptance, but people growing struggling and advancing with the materials put in front of them. One of Elliott Smith’s most-beloved and best-known songs (due, in no small part, to its inclusion on the Good Will Hunting soundtrack, the place many fans first heard Elliott Smith), Angeles. The soundtrack effectively mirrors the half-filled desires and lives that the film capitalizes on: restlessness, ennui, doubt, and unrequited love rule here. They all do it in ways that remain true to the characters they're cast as. Thankfully the soundtrack to Good Will Hunting doesn't strive for fake urban cool this film about white, working-class Bostonians gets a mostly white, working-class sound. It is how the characters manage to feel so real.Įveryone in this movie shows moments of honesty, failure and humanity.

All the usual stages of psychological development play out: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and eventual acceptance of life's trauma. The narrative is pretty standard: someone greater than their class and start held back by the legacy of that life trying to find a way out. That sentiment and barriers we all face accessing that virtue is the core of this movie. Matt Damon is also no slouch in that department. The soul of this movie is undoubtedly Robin Williams and his powerful ability to portrait genuine compassion woven with pain and hurt.
